Minghui School Students Experience Taiwanese Culture

Nearly 20 students and teachers from the Minghui School's Taiwan Chinese Language Learning Center (TCML) in Boston visited the Boston Overseas Community Affairs Council on April 12, 2025, participating in a 'Taiwanese Culture Guided Tour Day'.

Cultural Immersion

The event offered a range of cultural experiences, including:

  • Introduction to Taiwanese Martial Arts: Students learned basic techniques using traditional weapons like swords and staffs.
  • Diabolo (扯鈴) Workshop: Guided by FASCA students, participants learned the skills of this traditional Taiwanese performance art.
  • Taiwanese Cuisine Tasting: Students sampled popular Taiwanese foods like bubble tea, pineapple cakes, and fried rice noodles while learning about their cultural significance.
  • Traditional Religious Practices: A presentation covered temple beliefs, including fortune-telling with divination sticks (筊), Mazu temple processions, and legends of the Three Princes (三太子).
  • Puppetry (布袋戲): Students learned about this folk art, observing the performance techniques and even trying their hand at operating the puppets.
  • Mandarin Language Class: Practical language interaction helped students improve their conversational skills.

The event was lauded by both the TCML principal and the director of the Overseas Community Affairs Council as a successful opportunity for cultural enrichment.
