The author contends that Canada made a significant error by electing Mark Carney, arguing his inability to address economic challenges, particularly those stemming from Donald Trump's trade policies, constitutes a recipe for disaster.
The election was heavily influenced by Donald Trump's 25% tariffs on Canadian goods. The author contrasts this with Pierre Poilievre's portrayal as a Trumpist, refuting this comparison due to differing ideologies.
Despite a lack of evidence supporting his ability to mitigate Trump's trade policies, voters chose Carney to defend Canada's interests, even overlooking the Liberal government's prior economic performance.
The author concludes with a pessimistic outlook, expressing strong disapproval of the election outcome and anticipating negative consequences.
Donald Trump’s 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian products became the biggest issue of this election campaign. Many Canadians regarded the US as our greatest ally and friend They were furious at the president and the Republicans for ending this relationship and targeting them in an unnecessary tariff war. They branded Poilievre and Canada’s Conservatives as being Canadian-style Trumpists and two sides of the same political coin.
The comparison was, to put it mildly, ludicrous. Poilievre and Trump occasionally used similar messaging techniques, but have always had different ideologies, policies and personalities. Trump knew this, too. “I think his biggest problem is he’s not a MAGA guy, you know? I mean, he’s really not... a Trump guy at all,” he said in a February interview.
Instead, voters decided to back Carney as the best choice to take on Trump and defend Canada’s sovereignty and security. In spite of the fact that there’s absolutely no evidence that he could do anything to help or improve this situation. They even gave the Liberals a pass on a near-decade of disastrous government so that a Left-wing economist could be in charge of an already-weakened economy. That’s a recipe for disaster.
Oh, Canada. You’ve really messed up now.
