The Government Accountability Office (GAO), acting as a congressional watchdog, is conducting an audit of Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The audit, initiated in March, centers on DOGE's access to and potential misuse of sensitive government data. The investigation involves collaboration with the Department of Labor (DOL).
The audit was prompted by alarming media reports detailing untrained individuals within DOGE allegedly accessing and potentially altering data within federal systems, including the Social Security Administration and Treasury Department. These reports raised concerns about unauthorized data scraping and code changes.
The GAO review is expected to conclude by the end of spring, with a public report of its findings to follow.
