Beim Applaus sind fast alle blutüberströmt: Polonius, der nach einer Rauferei mit Hamlet tot liegen geblieben ist. Laertes, den Hamlet bei Polonius’ Beerdigung mit einer Axt erschlagen hat. Claudius, der gleichfalls nicht entkommen konnte. Und Hamlet, weil sich Ophelia bei ihrer letzten Umarmung mit einem Küchenmesser zur Wehr zu setzen wusste.
Ob auch Gertrude ihren Wunden noch erliegen wird, ob sie tatsächlich als Einzige davonkommt oder zuletzt als Vision der sterbenden Ophelia wieder auftaucht, die sich schließlich in der Badewanne die Pulsadern geöffnet hat: Wer könnte es sagen? Der Rest ist Schweigen.
