Emergency services in Bradford responded to reports of a person on fire on Broadway around 11:40 am. A man sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital.
West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, West Yorkshire Police, and Yorkshire Ambulance Service, including the air ambulance, all responded to the incident. Two fire crews attended from Bradford and Odsal.
A significant police cordon was established in the pedestrianised area of Broadway, leading to the closure of Bradford Council's Britannia House customer service centre. The public is advised to avoid the area.
Police are currently investigating the incident. Public comments expressed concern and sadness regarding the events.
There has been a huge emergency services presence in Broadway this afternoon, with a cordon covering a large part of the pedestrianised area.
West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said it was called to Broadway at 11.40am to "reports of a person on fire/burnt".
Two fire crews, from Bradford and Odsal, were sent to the scene.
A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said they received a "call for a concern for safety" and added that a man had suffered "life-threatening injuries".
Yorkshire Ambulance Service sent an ambulance, team leader, and the air ambulance to the scene.
The man was rushed to hospital via road ambulance.
Police are carrying out enquiries into the incident.
The police spokesperson said: "We would kindly ask people to avoid the area at this time."
The Telegraph & Argus visited the scene earlier this afternoon and saw a number of police officers within the cordon, as well as a rapid response fire service vehicle and a fire engine.
A member of the public who walked by the cordon said: “It’s extremely sad to hear about what has happened."
They added: "My thoughts are with him and his loved ones at this worrying time.
"It was quite alarming to see the large police cordon and all the emergency services personnel in the city centre."
A local resident: "It’s a big cordon. I’m not exactly sure what’s happened but it’s quite concerning seeing such a big cordon in the city centre."
Bradford Council's Britannia House customer service centre has been closed due to the ongoing incident.
The local authority said on Facebook: "Britannia House customer service centre is currently closed due to an ongoing incident.
"Emergency services are on scene, please avoid the area until further notice.
"If you need to contact the council please call 01274 432111 or find alternative contact information here https://orlo.uk/rjMNz.
"If you have nowhere to sleep tonight and need the homelessness service please phone 01274 435999.
"If you have no phone then you need to go to the Salvation Army or nearest Police Station."
