Chris Shelton, the tenant who safely escaped his West Fourth Street apartment on Saturday afternoon when a kitchen fire erupted, remains hospitalized in UPMC Williamsport, recovering from smoke inhalation, according to city Fire Chief Sam Aungst.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation, he said Monday afternoon. Five other tenants remain displaced as does a massage business, he added. Except for Shelton, the occupants should be back in the building at 420 W. Fourth St. once electrical service is restored and the property is inspected by a licensed electrician, the chief said. Any questionable code issues will also have to be resolved before the tenants are allowed back in, Aungst said.

The cause of the fire at the William Hepburn Apartments at 400 Lycoming St. that broke out late Wednesday afternoon on the balcony of Laurie Saunders’ seventh-floor apartment will remain undetermined, Aungst said. Saunders should be able to return to her apartment once it is cleaned and repairs are made, a spokeswoman for the Lycoming County Housing Authority said Monday. “We’ll make sure she has housing” while she waits to return to her apartment, the spokeswoman said.

Aungst said the cause of the fire that temporarily displaced tenants from their apartment building at 314 Locust St. on Jan. 8 will also remain undetermined.

Joseph Hope, deputy fire chief for Old Lycoming Township, said the April 26 front porch fire that routed Ronnie and Deborah Wells from their home at 1932 Lacomic St. will also go undetermined. Damage was estimated to be about $75,000 damage.

Hughesville Fire Chief Dan Dorman said Monday that the blaze that consumed the front of Calvin and Christina Murray’s home at 185 N. Second St. in the borough on April 24 will go undetermined. Damage there was in excess of $100,000 damage, he added.
