Marvel fans will have to wait a few extra months to see the upcoming onscreen assembly of superheroes. Marvel Studios and Disney have announced they are pushing back the release dates of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Avengers: Doomsday has been moved back from May 1, 2026, to Dec. 18, 2026, while its follow-up will now arrive in theaters on Dec. 17, 2027 instead of May 7, 2027. Doomsday is currently in production in London and the delay will give directors Joe and Anthony Russo more time to complete the film.

Marvel Studios hasn’t revealed much about the plot of Avengers: Doomsday, but they did unveil the cast list during a five-hour livestream event in March. It’s an expansive list of actors and characters, too: Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, James Marsden as Cyclops, Paul Rudd as Ant Man, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Wyatt Russel as U.S. Agent, Simu Liu  as Shang-Chi, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Danny Ramirez as The Falcon, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Lewis Pullman as Sentry, Tenoch Huerta Mejía as Namor, Joseph Quinn as the Human Torch, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijin as Mystique, James Marsden as Cyclops, Channing Tatum as Gambit, and Pedro Pascal as Mister Fantastic.

Last summer, Marvel Studios confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. would be returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom (despite his longtime character Iron Man dying in Avengers: Endgame). “If we’re going to bring Doctor Doom to the screen — he is one of the most complex characters, most entertaining characters in all of fiction,” Joe Russo explained at Comic Con 2024. “If we’re going to do this… then we are going to need the greatest actor in the world.” Downey Jr. added, “Same mask, new task.”

The next Marvel Studios film to hit theaters will be The Fantastic Four: First Steps, out July 25. It will be audiences’ first introduction to the new Fantastic Four — Pascal’s Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby’s Invisible Woman, Quinn’s Human Torch and Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s the Thing. It also stars Julia Garner as the Silver Surfer and Ralph Ineson as villain Galactus.
