My friend divulged disgusting sex secrets about my FATHER between sips of wine: DEAR JANE

Dear Jane,

My friend and I are in our 30s and, likes most girl friends, we've always enjoyed sharing tales about the various guys we are dating.

But I can't listen to her talk any longer about her latest fling.

We were out for drinks with friends recently when she revealed that she has started dating an older man.

Without revealing his identity, she divulged extremely intimate details about his income, their conversations and, yes, the sex they have.

While this would be typical fodder for our girls' night, when she finally showed us a photo of her new boyfriend, my jaw dropped.

It was my dad.

None of my girl friends have met my father, and in the moment I just decided to keep quiet. But I'm afraid I now feel disgusted.

I would feel bad telling her that I don't want to hear about her love life, but if she dishes anymore details about my father in the bedroom, I'll be sick.ย

My fear is that this drives a wedge between us or, worse, it could make things awkward for me with my dad.

Is there a way to set a boundary without hurting her feelings?

Sincerely,

Freaky Friend

Dear Freaky Friend,

I have the ick just reading this letter, so this must be awful for you.

Nobody on earth wants to hear details about their parents' sex lives.

So I have to assume that your friend didnโ€™t know he is your father, or this would have been the most insensitive and brutal way to tell you.

If you haven't yet told her, you need to do so immediately.

Be clear and firm. Tell her how uncomfortable you are and request that she does not discuss anything intimate with you.

You shouldn't feel bad setting this boundary.

If she is a friend - and if she has any common sense - she will immediately refrain from telling you anything else.

If she is not able to do so and her feelings are hurt, then maybe she is not the friend you thought she was.ย

Of course, now that she is dating your father you wouldn't want to fall out with her, but you could change the friendship to one that is perhaps more peripheral.
