A confrontation over a stolen Porsche erupted in gunfire Tuesday night, with a police officer firing a fatal shot at the 28-year-old driver on the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn, authorities said.
Officers attempted to pull over the Porsche with different plates on the front and rear of the car around 8:15 p.m. near the Coney Island exit in Brighton Beach. Another man was a passenger in the vehicle, cops said.
“Officers conducted a plate check on this vehicle and the plate came back to be stolen,” NYPD Chief of Department John Chell said at a late night press conference, adding it was “later discovered that this vehicle, in fact, was stolen out of Pennsylvania.”
“Our officers did not pursue, but radioed ahead to adjoining precincts that this stolen vehicle is heading in their direction,” he said, noting “officers tried to intercept this vehicle,” and at one point, an officer “came into close proximity” of the speeding car and was nearly struck.
At that time, Chell said, an officer “discharged one fire, one bullet striking the driver of this vehicle.”
“The vehicle proceeded to go a further exit to Pennsylvania Avenue, where it struck another department vehicle,” he recounted. “The passenger of this vehicle is quickly apprehended and our officers performed life saving measures on the driver.” The driver was the rushed to Brookdale University Hospital but couldn’t be saved.
“Everything I described to you was captured on body-worn camera,” Chell said of the deadly confrontation.
Officers injured in the chaotic takedown were being treated at a local hospital, Chell said, adding the driver was on federal probation for interstate transport of stolen vehicles out of Pennsylvania
The names of the driver and passenger were not immediately released.
