A light agenda was on tap for the South Williamsport Area School Board at its second May meeting this week.
Before moving forward with agenda items, district Superintendent Dr. Eric Briggs read a statement acknowledging the death of third grader Claue Schreffler-Algofera. Just over two weeks after being swept away while playing in the Susquehanna River near Front and Winthrop streets, 10-year-old Schreffler-Algofera’s body was recovered near Sunbury in Northumberland County Saturday evening.
“We stand with you tonight with heavy hearts to address a tragic incident involving one of our third grade students. This past Saturday, our community was shaken by the news that Kashaica Claue Schreffler-Algofera, a bright and beloved member of our Central Elementary School family, was found in the Susquehanna River,” Briggs said.
“Words cannot adequately express the profound sadness and grief that we, as a school district and a community, feel at this time. This is an unimaginable loss, and our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Claue’s family, friends, classmates and teachers. We share in their sorrow and offer unwavering support,” his statement continued.
“We recognize that this news had a significant impact on our entire school community. We’ve been working diligently to provide emotional support services to our students and staff, including counselors and support personnel who will be available should the need arise for our students and staff,” Briggs said.
Thank you to the outpouring of support we have received from our neighboring school districts in Lycoming County and to other outside agencies who have shown their support to our students and staff over the past couple of weeks, as we’ve experienced a roller coaster of emotions,” he said.
“As we continue to navigate this difficult time, let us come together to support one another, to offer comfort and understanding and to remember the joy and spirit that Claue brought to our lives,” he concluded.
The board moved to approve several items, including a Lycoming-Clinton HealthChoices Pilot School-Based Intensive Behavioral Health Services Program Reinvestment Plan. The district is one of three to take part in the program at no cost, for the purpose of increasing the timeliness of getting these services to students, increasing the continuity of care, improving communication, collaborating with school staff and increasing family engagement in services; a BlaST Division of Educational Proposal plan to provide two days of AI training to the district’s sixth through 12th grade staff, at a cost of $1,450.00. “We have a team of teachers that went through this training this year. They’ll be an IU person supporting them as they reproduce that training to our sixth through 12th grade teaching staff,” Briggs explained; as well as the list of graduating seniors.
The next board meeting will be at 6 p.m. on Monday, June 2, where the board will get an update on the ongoing budget process, with approval expected at their second June meeting two weeks later.
