LOWELL — There’s a saying that goes, “Lightning never strikes the same place twice.”

As proven in Downtown Lowell on Monday morning, that expression doesn’t apply to SUVs.

For the second time in a little more than four months, an SUV crashed into the apartment building at 305 Dutton St., a renovated mill building situated at the intersection of Dutton and Broadway streets.

The crash was reported shortly before 6:30 a.m. Monday. Lowell Deputy Superintendent Mark LeBlanc said the driver was transported to a local hospital by ambulance for treatment of minor injuries and discharged a short time later.

LeBlanc added no citations were issued.

Not only did the SUV — a Toyota C-HR — strike the same building, but the wreck impacted the same first-floor unit as the previous crash that took place on April 11. In fact, the SUV’s frontend ended up jutting into the same bedroom inside the apartment.

Normally, there would be a window where the SUV struck on Monday, but instead, that section of the building was still boarded up with plywood from the April crash.

At the time of Monday’s wreck, Mario Bezerra, who lives inside in the unit, said he was sleeping on a couch inside when he was awoken by a violent “BOOM.” He pointed to a bruise on his knee caused when he fell off the couch and onto the floor following the shocking sound.

Right after the impact, Bezerra went outside and took video of the scene with his phone that showed the driver of the SUV laying on his back on the sidewalk along the building while talking to a police officer.

The images captured by Bezerra look nearly identical to the previous crash that took place around 5:20 p.m. April 11 — also a Monday — with the vehicle even sticking into the building at the same angle.

The previous crash involved a Lexus SUV that hopped the sidewalk and crashed through the windows. On the other side of those windows is the bedroom of teenager Jonathan Silva. The crash sent shards of glass into his bedroom and knocked over his loft bed, which was situated right next to the windows.

Jonathan was not inside his bedroom at the time of either crash.

LeBlanc said on Wednesday that the driver involved in the April wreck also did not receive any citations.

The Dutton Street apartment building is owned by PMC Property Group, which owns apartments across the east coast of the U.S.

Ashley Taipale, the local building’s property manager, said in an email on Wednesday that PMC Property Group declined to comment about the incident, since it remains under investigation by authorities.
