The 32-year-old Ilkley-based firm appointed a liquidator on 20 May this year, official documents have revealed.

A newly published statement of affairs shows the company owed almost £275,000, including nearly £49,000 to the HMRC.

The practice was founded in 1993 by David Halliday and Adam Clark, and completed an array of modern homes, cultural venues and public facilities.

These included the Centre for Creativity at the Theatre Royal in Wakefield, a conversion of a nightclub into the boutique Ilkley Cinema, various projects at Bradford Grammar School, and the revamp of Harrogate Golf Club’s clubhouse. Six years ago, it refurbished and extended the Grade II*-listed Saints Parish Church in Ilkley.

The practice's portfolio also included numerous student accommodation schemes in Leeds.

Originally operating in Bradford and then Shipley, the company moved into its own, self-designed offices in Ilkley in 2018.

Halliday Clark had net assets of £105,000 on 31 May 2024, its latest published accounts show. This was down from £161,000 a year earlier.

The practice’s headcount had dropped to an average of 8, having stood at 11 in the year to May 2023. The company had a workforce of 15 in 2019 when it was subject to a managment buyout.

David Robson of insolvency specialist Gaines Robson was appointed as liquidator last month. He declined to comment.

Both of the practice’s cofounders retired from the compnay in 2022. Clark chaired the RIBA Yorkshire regional awards jury that year.

Asked about the practice’s demise, Clark said: ‘It is a massive shame. After nearly 30 years, we sold the practice in May 2022 in very good health, but it seems to have struggled since our departure.

‘We are very proud of Halliday Clark’s achievements over our time of ownership. It had become a bit of a regional institution with fantastic clients, staff, and many awards and never had an overdraft.

‘I have been very busy in my retirement, chairing an outdoor education charity, but the creation and success of Halliday Clark will always be my biggest and best achievement.’
