The Apollo Children’s Hospital has established a centre of excellence in paediatric orthopaedics and trauma care. The facility will serve children requiring specialised orthopaedic treatment from injuries sustained while playing sports or due to complex congenital conditions.

A team of trauma specialists, orthopaedic surgeons, and a rehabilitation team will be available at the centre.

A hospital release said that doctors were seeing complex cases besides congenital conditions such as clubfoot and hip dysplasia requiring surgical attention.

The team specialises in treating paediatric orthopaedic conditions such as developmental disorders, limb deformities, neuromuscular issues, injuries, infections, tumours, besides congenital spinal deformities and abnormalities in gait.

Highly equipped

R. Sankar, senior consultant paediatric orthopaedic and spine surgeon at the hospital said, “Our goal is not only to treat injuries or deformities, but also to ensure that every child returns to a life of activity, movement, and confidence. With access to advanced surgical technologies and a multidisciplinary team, we are equipped to handle everything from routine sports injuries to the most complex orthopaedic challenges in children.”

The chief executive officer of Apollo Hospitals, Chennai region, Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy said that the facility had integrated medical care with child-friendly design, recovery rooms with interactive walls and entertainment systems, physical therapy areas with rehabilitation equipment that feel more like play than work.

The centre can handle up to 140 procedures a month.

Emergency trauma services have protocols designed specifically for paediatric cases. Plastic surgeons for complex soft tissue repairs, vascular specialists for circulation issues, and paediatric anesthesiologists, experienced in managing young patients during surgery, are part of the team.
