Three farms have withdrawn from a $3.2 million St. Louis County fresh food program, citing concerns about Rustic Roots Sanctuary and its founder, Janett Lewis, who is overseeing the grant and will receive the largest portion of funds. The withdrawing farms—Coahoma Orchards, Heru Urban Farming, and Confluence Farms—allege misrepresentation of the project and numerous red flags.
The farmers claim Lewis misrepresented the project to both the public and the County Council, which approved the funding unanimously despite these concerns. They accuse Lewis of lying about their lack of essential paperwork (deeds, insurance). Specific concerns include:
Lewis counters that the farms lacked necessary documentation and intends to reallocate the funds.
The County Council unanimously approved the program despite questions about the bidding process. Councilwoman Shalonda Webb, who introduced the bill, defended the grant, citing Rustic Roots’ track record. However, post-vote concerns from farmers about logistics and funding distribution remained unaddressed.
The farmers, upon learning of Lewis' explanation for their withdrawal, expressed anger, accusing her of sabotaging their businesses. Lewis maintains she’s ensuring due diligence. The County Executive is currently reviewing the legislation.
