Mike Waltz, Donald Trump's National Security Advisor, and his deputy Alex Wong resigned from their positions. The resignations followed an investigation into a leak of confidential information from the Signal app, where Waltz accidentally included a journalist, Jeffrey Goldberg from The Atlantic, in a chat discussing secret plans for US airstrikes in Yemen.
While Trump initially defended Waltz, many Democrats and Republicans called for his resignation. Steve Witkoff, Trump's special envoy to the Middle East, is a potential replacement. Witkoff is notable for having met with Vladimir Putin multiple times.
Trump reportedly planned to replace Waltz after the Signal app incident, where sensitive information was shared with a journalist. Waltz sought advice from Vice President Jay Dee Vance and other close associates on how to repair the damage. Despite an investigation clearing his name, Waltz faced continued pressure and was perceived as a hawkish figure, clashing with Trump's "America First" policy.
Other key administration officials involved in the Signal app group chat attended a National Prayer Day event at the White House, where Trump thanked them for their work. This included Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. Also present were Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Attorney General Pam Bondi.
