The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) sent a letter to Belinda Gread, a satirical Liberal Senate candidate in Victoria, for potentially violating the Electoral Act by impersonating a Liberal candidate. The AEC cited section 329(1) of the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918, which addresses misleading or deceptive publications. Gread's campaign materials, including corflutes displaying the Liberal Party logo and identifying her as a Liberal candidate, were deemed potentially misleading to voters.
The AEC stated that while many would understand the satire, some might be misled into believing Gread was a legitimate Liberal candidate. The investigation was prompted by public complaints. The AEC clarified that while satire is common in Australian politics, it shouldn't mislead voters about voting.
Following the AEC's letter, Gread rebranded as a pro-nuclear, anti-woke independent candidate. Gread's character is played by Nic Bedford, whose name now appears on the updated campaign materials, which include a disclaimer stating their satirical intent. Gread expressed disappointment over the situation and claimed support from some within the Liberal Party.
