The rector of the University of Panama, Eduardo Flores Castro, strongly refutes accusations made by President José Raúl Mulino, who claimed the university is a breeding ground for political conspiracies and dissent. The rector defends the institution's historical role in Panamanian democracy, citing instances of student activism and contributions to science and research.
Flores Castro rejects accusations of violence and political bias within the university. He explains that student organizations have to follow regulations regarding space usage and that the university is not selective in renting its facilities. He asserts that the university does not discriminate based on ideologies, renting spaces to groups from different political and religious backgrounds.
Flores Castro also addresses the issue of “eternal students”, emphasizing that the university provides education opportunities for all who seek it, regardless of age. He states that the university does not deny access to education based on time constraints. He explains that the university balances the right to protest with maintaining order. Although acknowledging that protests can disrupt classes, he maintains that violence and masking during protests are unacceptable.
Finally, Flores Castro expresses his desire for a more calm dialogue with the president to address their disagreements.
