The Spanish government has begun the process of selecting a location for its new Space Agency (AEE), aiming to place it outside of Madrid as part of a decentralization effort. The process involves a one-month period for a consultative commission to establish criteria, followed by the submission of candidacies from autonomous communities and municipalities.
Municipalities like Robledo de Chavela, Tres Cantos, Teruel, Seville, and León have shown interest. The selection criteria will prioritize factors such as infrastructure, financial commitments, and support for relocating personnel. The commission will then submit a proposal to the Council of Ministers.
The AEE will coordinate national space activities and policies, manage Spain's involvement in international programs, and play a crucial role in the execution of the Aerospace Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation (Perte).
The government emphasizes the importance of decentralizing public sector agencies to promote territorial cohesion, improve access to public service, and distribute opportunities more evenly across the country.
