Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has organized a protest in BrasÃlia for Wednesday, July 7th. The protest aims to advocate for amnesty for those convicted in connection with the January 8th, 2023 attacks on government buildings.
Part of BrasÃlia's Esplanada dos Ministérios will be closed, and police will block access to the National Congress. Three of six lanes on the Eixo Monumental will be closed; two for protesters, one for police, and the remaining for traffic.
The protest, organized by pastor Silas Malafaia, is expected to draw between 2,500 and 5,000 participants. It will start at 4 PM at the BrasÃlia TV Tower and march towards the Congress, approximately three kilometers. Security personnel will utilize barricades to prevent protesters from reaching government buildings.
Despite recent medical discharge after a lengthy hospital stay following surgery, Bolsonaro intends to attend the demonstration, but medical advice recommends against it, urging him to avoid crowds to reduce the risk of infection.
The protest comes amidst political discussions regarding amnesty for those involved in the January 8th events. Senator Davi Alcolumbre has proposed an alternative bill that would reduce sentences but increase penalties for those orchestrating the attacks.
