Los Angeles County Deputy Trevor Kirk was convicted of a felony count of deprivation of rights under color of law for excessive force during an arrest of Jacy Houseton, who had been involved in a possible robbery.
Kirk's attorney and the Los Angeles Sheriff's Professional Association (LASPA) argue that Kirk used minimal force and that Houseton was resisting arrest. They also point to Houseton's criminal history and the fact that she and the other suspect, Damon Barnes, were never charged in connection with the alleged robbery.
LASPA claims that Sheriff Robert Luna, under pressure from activist groups, invited federal agencies to investigate, resulting in Kirk's prosecution. Luna denies this, stating that the case was initiated by the plaintiff's attorney.
Outraged by Kirk's treatment, many deputies are boycotting the Baker to Vegas relay race and are participating in a 5K to raise money for Kirk. LASPA suggests Luna's alleged actions have damaged his reputation within the law enforcement community.
There are also accusations that Luna's staff have been intimidating deputies involved in the boycott.
With President Trump now in office, there's hope for Kirk's case to be reviewed by the DOJ under new leadership. The attorney and LASPA express hope that Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon will intervene.
