Connecticut Land Transfer

The state of Connecticut plans to transfer a 46.8-acre landlocked parcel in Sprague to the Avalonia Land Conservancy. The property, located on Bushnell Hollow Road, is comprised of wooded parcels, islands, and a peninsula along the Shetucket River, and is situated in a FEMA-mapped flood zone, restricting construction.

Reasons for Transfer

The state deems the land excess and unnecessary for transportation purposes. The assessed value is between $14,720 and $21,030. The property abuts an active rail line and has no buildings or other impervious cover, consisting primarily of forest and water bodies.

Avalonia Land Conservancy's Role

Avalonia Land Conservancy, a non-profit dedicated to conservation, will acquire the property to add to its existing holdings. The land will be used for conservation purposes, adding to their over 5,400 acres already conserved across multiple Connecticut towns.

Legislative Process

The transfer is subject to a legislative process, including a public hearing and approval from the Government Oversight Committee. The Council on Environment Quality noted the potential presence of state-listed species on the property.
