An analysis of average spending per deputy in Panama's National Assembly reveals stark inequalities in the use of public resources among different political parties. The PRD leads with an average of $102,384.31 per deputy, significantly higher than the spending of smaller parties like Vamos ($15,222.50) and Moca ($16,383.33).
While most party leaders remained silent, Janine Prado from the Vamos coalition advocated for transparency and public release of audit results. She questioned the high spending of some deputies, especially the employment of individuals who do not actually work at the assembly.
Deputy Prado describes the spending as 'the never-ending evil' fueled by political maneuvering and clientelism, even affecting citizen participation offices. She calls for accountability and an end to shielding those who abuse the system.
The PRD party, with 12 deputies, has a monthly payroll of $1.2 million, unevenly distributed. Benicio Robinson's office stands out, with 145 collaborators and a monthly cost of $261,225, followed by Marcos Castillero with 150 employees and a monthly cost of $226,282.
