The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) announced the deactivation of approximately 500,000 federal credit cards deemed "unused" or "unneeded". This action is part of a broader program auditing federal agencies' credit card usage, spanning 32 agencies over 10 weeks.
The deactivated credit cards belonged to various agencies, including the Office of Personnel Management, General Services Administration, Labor Department, and several others.
DOGE claims to have saved approximately $165 billion, or $1,000 per taxpayer, since its inception. However, this is countered by Democratic allegations that DOGE is withholding $430 billion in Congressional-appropriated funds.
Elon Musk's role in DOGE is coming to an end in May, although he plans to ensure the implemented cost-cutting measures remain in place. His departure coincides with Tesla reporting lower-than-expected profits.
This initiative is part of a larger Trump administration effort to restructure the federal government, resulting in lawsuits against certain actions.
