The Spanish government's delay in updating the salaries of public employees has resulted in a significant backlog of unpaid compensation, estimated at €1.224 billion by the CSIF union. This amount includes €504 million in back pay owed from a 0.5% increase that was approved but not yet disbursed, and €720 million for the projected salary increase for 2025.
CSIF emphasizes the need for immediate implementation of the 0.5% increase, citing that it was approved for military personnel and could be applied similarly to other public workers. Beyond salary increases, the union also demands negotiations for a new public employment offer and a reduction to 35-hour workweeks. The current situation has led to delays in initiatives such as partial retirement, further highlighting the government's lack of preparedness, according to the union.
