An analysis of RTI data from several Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) reveals a significant overrepresentation of faculty from the General Category. In some institutions, over 90% of faculty belong to the General Category, while in others, the figure ranges from 80-90%. This contrasts sharply with the mandated reservation policy of 27% for Other Backward Classes (OBCs), 15% for Scheduled Castes (SCs), and 7.5% for Scheduled Tribes (STs).
The data shows considerable variation among institutions. While some IITs and IIMs exhibit a stark imbalance, others like IIT Patna display a more equitable distribution of faculty across categories, with a significant proportion belonging to OBC, SC, and ST categories. IIM Jammu also showed a more balanced representation.
The RTI requests also uncovered substantial vacancies across various categories in both IITs and IIMs. Notably, the number of unfilled positions in the OBC, SC, and ST categories was significant.
These findings highlight a significant gap between mandated reservation policies and actual faculty composition in many premier educational institutions in India.
