India, through its External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, voiced its support for a swift ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The statement was made during the first India-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Ministerial Meeting for Strategic Dialogue in Saudi Arabia.
Jaishankar highlighted the situation in Gaza as India's foremost concern. While condemning terrorism and hostage-taking, he expressed deep sorrow over the civilian deaths. He stressed that any response must adhere to humanitarian law and reiterated India's support for a ceasefire.
The conflict began on October 7, 2024, with Hamas's unprecedented attack on Israel, followed by Israel's subsequent offensive in Gaza. This resulted in significant casualties on both sides.
Jaishankar reaffirmed India's commitment to a two-state solution for the Palestinian issue and its continued support for Palestinian institutions and UNRWA. India has provided humanitarian relief and increased its aid to the UNRWA.
The meeting also focused on strengthening India's relations with the GCC. Jaishankar highlighted the strong people-to-people ties (nearly 9 million Indians in the Gulf), substantial trade volume (USD 184.46 billion in 2022-23), and opportunities for future collaboration in energy, technology, and other sectors. He emphasized the 3Ps framework: People, Prosperity, and Progress for future cooperation.
