The Real Colegio de San Clemente de los Españoles, the only medieval college still open in continental Europe, has survived centuries of wars, seizures, and attempts of appropriation. Its continued existence is attributed to its financial independence, relying on the substantial endowment left by its founder, Cardinal Gil de Albornoz, without public subsidies.
