Madhya Pradesh's New Excise Policy

The Madhya Pradesh cabinet approved a new excise policy that shuts down 'ahatas' (drinking areas attached to liquor shops) and shop bars. This move aims to curb alcohol consumption in the state.

Key Provisions

  • Closure of all 'ahatas' and shop bars.
  • Increased distance between liquor shops and educational institutions, girls' hostels, and religious places from 50 meters to 100 meters.
  • Stricter laws for drunk driving, including license cancellations.

The policy follows demands from BJP leader Uma Bharti for a controlled liquor policy, even though she initially advocated for complete prohibition. No new liquor shops have been opened in the state since 2010, and 64 were closed during the Narmada Seva Yatra.

Uma Bharti's Campaign

Uma Bharti has actively campaigned against liquor consumption, protesting against the sale of alcohol and urging people to choose milk over alcohol. Her protests included symbolic actions such as tying cows in front of liquor shops and throwing dung at them.
