Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, along with several ministers including Gustavo Adrianzén (Prime Minister), Leslie Urteaga (Culture), and Elmer Schialer (Foreign Affairs), attended the private wake of Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa in Barranco. Fanny Montellanos (Women and Vulnerable Populations) and Juan Carlos Castro (Environment) were also present.
The Peruvian government declared a national day of mourning on April 14, 2025, in honor of Vargas Llosa. Flags were flown at half-mast in all public buildings across the country and in Peruvian diplomatic missions abroad.
Mario Vargas Llosa passed away at age 89 on the previous Sunday. His death was announced by his son, Álvaro Vargas Llosa, on social media. The family requested a private ceremony with cremation.
