Argentine President Javier Milei will travel to Vatican City on Thursday to attend Pope Francis's funeral mass. He will be accompanied by a small delegation of six high-ranking officials: Karina Milei (Secretary General of the Presidency), Guillermo Francos (Chief of Staff), Gerardo Werthein (Foreign Minister), Sandra Pettovello (Minister of Human Capital), Patricia Bullrich (Minister of National Security), and Manuel Adorni (Presidential Spokesperson). They will be joined by security and protocol personnel.
The government aimed for a minimal delegation, a shift from previous practices where larger groups traveled. Nahuel Sotelo, Secretary of Worship and Civilization, who serves as the main liaison between the Vatican and the Casa Rosada, will arrive in Vatican City beforehand to organize the itinerary. He plans to stay for an extended period, possibly until a successor to Pope Francis is chosen.
Vice President Victoria Villarruel is not part of the official delegation, and it's unclear whether she will attend independently. Other legislative and judicial authorities are also expected to travel to Rome. Jorge Macri, the head of the Buenos Aires government, will also attend, departing on Friday. Several world leaders, including Donald Trump, Giorgia Meloni, and Emmanuel Macron, will also attend the funeral ceremony.
