The article centers on 80-year-old Jerzy Å»., who in 2017, transferred his apartment to Karol Nawrocki and his wife in exchange for care. Nawrocki, a PiS candidate for president and head of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), claims he couldn't care for Jerzy due to his inability to locate him since December. However, Onet journalists found Jerzy in a state-run nursing home.
The city of Gdańsk and Jerzy himself cover the approximately 92,000 PLN annual cost of Jerzy's care in the nursing home, according to Gdańsk's spokesperson, Daniel Stenzel. The Municipal Center for Social Assistance (MOPR) has been involved in his care since 2007, and the court authorized his placement in the home in April 2024.
Nawrocki claims all legal and ownership matters of Jerzy's apartment have been addressed during an investigation, and continues to pay its costs. He denied neglecting Jerzy, attributing this to distance and his work, but couldn't explain his failure to provide contact details for locating Jerzy sooner. He also addressed questions about his property disclosure.
