Isabel Perelló, president of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), is blocking the appointment of two key Supreme Court justices: the president of the Criminal Chamber and the president of the Administrative Chamber. These appointments require a three-fifths majority (13 votes).
While the Supreme Court's Governing Body deemed four preselected candidates suitable, Perelló favors candidates backed by conservative CGPJ members. This move disregards legal mandates for gender equality and the 10-10 balance between PSOE/Sumar and PP-appointed members within the CGPJ. Perelló is even considering invalidating the entire selection process to start anew with preferred candidates.
This action potentially delays filling vital positions within the Supreme Court, and potentially undermines the existing legal frameworks and parity rules within the council.
