The Brazilian Supreme Court (STF) voted to convict federal deputy Carla Zambelli (PL-SP) to five years and three months in prison for illegal possession of a firearm and unlawful constraint. This conviction also includes the possible revocation of her mandate.
The STF's decision needs confirmation from the Chamber of Deputies, which will initiate an impeachment process only after the conviction is final and unappealable. The STF's judgement is currently suspended for 90 days due to a request for review. The timeline for the revocation is therefore uncertain.
If Zambelli's mandate is revoked, her substitute, Colonel Tadeu (PL-SP), will assume her seat. However, the process might take until the end of her term, potentially benefiting from colleague support to avoid removal.
Despite accusations from Jair Bolsonaro, Carla Zambelli was the most voted PL deputy, surpassing even Eduardo Bolsonaro in the 2022 elections.
