Donald Trump, in a post on Truth Social, wished Canada well in its election but controversially suggested annexing the country into the United States, citing economic benefits and eliminating trade deficits. He also described the US-Canada border as artificially drawn and claimed the move would be mutually advantageous.
Canadian political leaders strongly rejected Trump's proposal. Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative Party leader, told Trump to stay out of Canada's election and declared Canada would remain sovereign and independent.
Poilievre emphasized that only Canadians should decide Canada's future, rejecting Trump's claims and asserting that Canada would never become the 51st state. He even stated that voters should choose candidates who would stand up to the United States.
Trump clarified in a Time magazine interview that his desire to annex Canada is not a troll; he believes the United States loses billions of dollars annually in trade with Canada, and that the United States subsidizes Canada. The White House Press Secretary confirmed that Trump's stance remains unchanged.
