Joakim Medin, a Swedish citizen, has been sentenced to 11 months and 7 days in prison, suspended, in Turkey for insulting the president. This sentence won't be served unless he commits another crime in Turkey within five years.
Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard expressed relief that this part of the process was swift, but noted Medin remains in detention awaiting trial on a second charge. The government is working intensively to secure Medin's return to Sweden.
