Two simultaneous construction projects in Valladolid's Cuatro de Marzo neighborhood have resulted in the loss of 140 parking spaces. One project, renewing water pipes, eliminated 60 spaces, while a second project to renovate the area around Francisco de Quevedo school and the neighborhood church removed another 80. This accounts for 15% of the neighborhood's total parking spaces.
Residents and the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party) criticized the city council's lack of planning for the overlapping projects. Councilor Luis Vélez stated that the administration was unresponsive to residents' concerns.
Alberto Gutiérrez, the councilor for Mobility, defended the council's actions. He highlighted the necessity to finish the second project before the start of the school year and the planned church rehabilitation works starting in September. He also mentioned that the timelines for the water pipe project had been shortened.
As a mitigation measure, the city council permitted residents with parking permits to park in a nearby neighborhood, La Farola, during the four months of the second project. The council also asserted that the projects are well-coordinated and that the timelines of the first project were shortened through inter-municipal dialogue.
Currently, 140 parking spaces are unavailable to residents. The council expects to recover 60 of these spaces by the end of May.
