Panama Canal's Fourth Lane: An Energy Corridor
The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) is creating a new energy corridor, essentially a 'fourth lane,' to diversify its revenue and leverage its geographic location. This project involves a gas pipeline that will enable the transfer of energy products between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans without using the traditional canal infrastructure or water.
How it Works
Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) will be transferred from ship to ship via a pipeline network that crosses the Isthmus of Panama. This land-based transfer system avoids the need for water and the traditional canal locks. The initiative aims to capitalize on the Canal's strategic position and enhance its economic capabilities.
Significance and Goals
The project's main objective is to diversify the Canal's revenue streams and fully utilize its geographical advantages. This initiative has been discussed since 2017, and the ACP is currently revisiting the concept to bring it to fruition.
El Canal de Panamá ha retomado la creación de un corredor energético que funcionará como un ‘cuarto carril’ sin agua. Parece que el Canal está volviendo a considerar algunos de los negocios conexos al paso de barcos, sobre los cuales se hablaba desde 2017.
Se trata de un gasoducto que permitiría el trasiego de productos energéticos entre el Atlántico y el Pacífico sin necesidad de que los buques crucen la vía interoceánica por esclusas.
Con esto, la Autoridad del Canal de Panamá (ACP) busca diversificar sus ingresos y aprovechar al máximo su ubicación geográfica. Este nuevo modelo de operación consiste en transferir gas licuado de petróleo (GLP) de un buque a otro a través de una red de tuberías que cruzaría el istmo por tierra, evitando el uso de agua y la infraestructura tradicional del Canal.
