Skokie police advised the Skokie Public Library, Oakton College, schools, businesses and residents near downtown Skokie to shelter in place Monday morning after a man was reported waving a firearm near the area of Hull Street and Niles Avenue, according to Skokie police.

Police officers arrived at the 4900 block of Hull Street around 10:56 a.m., according to Sergeant Brandi Shelton, to search the area. The shelter-in-place advisory was issued out of caution, she said, for officers to safely investigate the incident. Shelton said no one is in custody following the situation.

Jane Hanna, the Communications and Multimedia Engagement Manager for the Skokie Public Library, said the lockdown order was in effect for half an hour. Ewa Lyczewska, Oakton Collegeโ€™s communications manager, said Oakton leadership monitored the situation and remained in communication with local authorities. Students in the Early Childhood Education Center remained safely indoors throughout the incident, she said in an email to Pioneer Press.

Lincoln Middle School is adjacent to the block where police responded, but representatives of Skokie-Morton Grove School District 69 did not respond to a request for comment.
