A bill aiming to restrict firearm use by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's security detail passed a committee in Brazil's Chamber of Deputies. The proposal, driven by lawmakers aligned with the 'bancada da bala' (gun lobby), stems from the president's anti-gun stance. The vote concluded with 15 in favor, 8 against, and 1 abstention.
The bill's relator, Gilvan da Federal (PL-ES), shockingly expressed a wish for the president's death, stating, “I want more than Lula to die; I want him to go to the fifth circle of hell.”
The bill's author, Delegado Caveira (PL-PA), argued the security detail's actions should align with the president's ideology, suggesting that prohibiting firearm use is consistent with the government's promotion of a culture of peace and non-violent solutions.
Pastor Henrique Vieira (PSOL-RJ), the sole government-aligned deputy to speak against the bill, criticized it as absurd and questioned the lawmakers' motives, suggesting either ignorance or malice.
