Torremolinos is in advanced talks with Spain's Tourism Institute (Turespaña) to acquire its Congress Palace. The municipality aims to invest in upgrades and enhance its economic potential.
The Congress Palace, inaugurated in 1970, was previously managed by a municipal company that was dissolved due to debt. The city council now seeks full ownership.
The Mayor, Margarita del Cid, formally requested the purchase in January 2024, emphasizing the venue's need for immediate improvements. Turespaña has expressed interest but requires a valuation from the Treasury department before proceeding. This valuation process is currently underway.
Once the price is determined, Torremolinos will make an economic proposal. Plans include a collaborative management model involving potential private sector participation, to handle renovation costs and increase profitability.
Similar initiatives were considered during a previous mayoral term, exploring public-private partnerships, but ultimately unsuccessful.
The Congress Palace, designed by Rafael de la Hoz and Gerardo Olivares James, is highlighted as an architectural gem representing functionalist, avant-garde, and brutalist styles.
